Collaboration was the key to achieving a gleaming result on time

The Punangairi Visitor Experience Centre in Hokitika is a $41 million facility designed to offer an iconic experience for visitors to Paparoa National Park with modern amenities and striking architecture. It replaces the previous visitor centre built in 1987. The new centre consists of two linked buildings with a total floor area of 1,165 square metres.

Mirror Image Cleaning were contracted to provide the final clean before the grand opening. Our challenge was to begin cleaning while the building was still occupied by various tradespeople and ensure that the deadline for the grand opening could be met.

The design features a curved frontage with a full-height glass façade and beech inserts, creating a visually striking appearance. The glass windows range in height from 5 to 10 metres, allowing for ample natural light and stunning views of the surrounding landscape. We knew that high access equipment such as scissor lifters and high ladders would be required to ensure a sparkling finish and were prepared accordingly.

The final cleaning was extensive and thorough. It involved cleaning all interior surfaces, including glass and frames, and the exterior surfaces required a complete building washdown. We divided the cleaning process into two stages. The first stage focused on the main building and its facilities, with a revisit for cleaning after the tradespeople had completed their work. The second stage involved cleaning the exhibition space, which is linked to the main building via a linkway. In both stages collaboration was key to ensuring disruption was kept to a minimum.

Our cleaning team made three visits in total, with each visit requiring staff to drive over from Christchurch and stay for between two and five nights at a time.

The new Punangairi Visitor Experience Centre is a testament of the commitment of those involved to provide the West Coast area with top-notch facilities for visitors to the Paparoa National Park. The careful planning and execution of the final cleaning process ensured that the centre opened in pristine condition, ready to welcome visitors.

We feel privileged to have provided the cleaning services for this exciting development and encourage you to visit the Centre on your next trip to the Coast.

At Mirror Image, we pride ourselves on delivering top-notch commercial cleaning services. Our recent project for the new Pak’nSave at Papanui is testament to our commitment to excellence.

Our contract began with the routine cleaning of site sheds. This involved weekly visits to maintain the cleanliness and hygiene of the builder’s and other trades’ site sheds, including offices, smoko sheds, and toilets. The major task, however, was to ensure a thorough cleaning of all areas in preparation for the store’s opening. This included cleaning all glass surfaces, both inside and outside. The building’s expansive floor area of over 7000m² required meticulous planning to ensure comprehensive coverage.

We undertook the final clean in stages, starting with the liquor section to allow suppliers to stock and secure their products. We also ensured the interiors and exteriors of upright cooler and freezer cabinets were pristine once installed.

To reach all areas, we utilised height equipment such as scissor lifters and knuckle booms. Our staff are trained and certified in using this equipment, renewing their qualifications every two years to ensure safe work practices.

Our ability to clean every aspect of the building gave the main contractor the confidence to deliver the project to their customer on time and to the highest standards.

When Armitage Williams took on the challenge of turning Foodstuffs’ distribution centre in Northcote into a fully functional and modern school for Marian College’s four hundred students, they knew they needed a cleaning company that would stay the distance and be there when needed. They chose Mirror Image because they knew we had the expertise and experience to deliver quality results from the first day of construction to the final handover.

It was a massive project, which included the construction of a chapel, twenty-six classrooms, a gymnasium, four multi-use indoor courts, and a performing arts centre, all under one giant canopy. The centre-piece chapel featured a large cross made from the wood of an oak tree from the old Shirley site and a star-lit ceiling that represented the night sky from when the school first opened in 1982.

Once a week, over the two-year building period, our staff were onsite at 6.30 am, cleaning the building site sheds, offices, meeting rooms and toilet blocks. We also provided consumables for the site, ensuring the builders could focus on their mammoth task of turning a giant shed into a dream school for the students to learn in.

Our experienced team of cleaners and window cleaners, working at height and ticketed for high-access equipment, reached every nook and cranny of the complex project.

We delivered a thorough polish once the build was complete, highlighting the exceptional construction undertaken by the builders.

A job well done by all involved; we look forward to the next project with Armitage Williams. Congratulations to Marian College for dreaming big and seeing the potential of the existing site.

Paragon Apartments on Armagh have set a new standard in luxury and design for inner-city living in Christchurch.

The nine-storey building contains fourteen individualised, three-bedroom with ensuite units, a penthouse, and a double-level gallery. Construction company Naylor Love has created a building that has been built to last and is of the highest quality in construction materials and design. Detail is everything to them, right down to the final fittings and clean once construction is over. They wanted the new owners not only to be impressed but to fall in love with their new home immediately.

They chose Mirror Image Cleaning to keep work areas clear during construction and the final clean upon completion because they knew their values matched ours for pride in work and attention to detail. They also knew that we have the experience, knowledge and equipment to do the job well and on time.

As one of the final ‘tradies’ onsite, we worked to a tight deadline and had to work around others who were also working hard to finish their part of the construction detail ‘yesterday’. Because of the building’s size and scope, a lot of glass and high ceilings, we had to use specialist equipment to ensure every nook and cranny was left sparkling clean and dust-free. Unique features, including oak flooring, oak joinery, Travertine stone floors and marble wall linings in the bathrooms, also meant we had to use cleaning materials that did not include harsh chemicals that would be detrimental to finishings. Apartments were ‘staggered for release’, which meant that we could ‘lock down’ each one after cleaning, preserving the finish, until the new owners were ready to move in.

This was not the first time we have worked with Naylor Love to provide cleaning services during construction and pre-occupancy. Our relationship with them is a long standing one and we look forward to working with them on their next exciting development in the rebuild of Christchurch.

Christchurch ReBuild:  Most of the 450 workforce of Environment Canterbury (ECan) were spread across numerous offices around Christchurch, following the 2010-11 Canterbury earthquakes. The new purpose-built ECan Offices reunited the team after a $50m rebuild. As designated cleaning contractors, Mirror Image was delighted to ensure the workforce walked into a sparkling clean new facility.

ECan Building

The Naylor Love Canterbury team began constructing the purpose-built offices on Tuam Street in 2013. Built over five storeys (7,000m²) the offices include a full-height atrium through the centre, a basement car park, and a two-storey cycle and locker building with space for 120 bikes. The high-end interior finishes include large areas of timber panelling in the public areas and board room, with beautiful carpentry.

As befits a building for the organisation responsible for a wide range of environment-related governance and services in Canterbury, the ECan building utilises the latest in environmentally sustainable features, including a ground-source heat exchange unit for heating and cooling.

The base-isolated building is also seismically strong, having been built to 120% of code, with piling to approximately 16m below the ground surface, and more than 7,800m³ of soil excavated for the basement car park.

This major project was completed on time and within budget, with ECan’s 450 staff moving into their stunning new open-plan offices in April 2016. Mirror Image was proud to provide a professional clean inside and out, using knuckle booms and our experienced team to do this impressive building justice.

Cleaning Schools Across Canterbury

We’ve been asked to clean schools across the region for major construction work either post earthquake, renovation work or new builds. We’ve been honoured to work with some of the leading Construction firms of the region to get schools back open as quickly as possible. Here’s a couple of memorable projects we’ve been involved with.

Lincoln Primary School

Looking back at our past projects we found photos of the renovation and Mirror Image clean through of Lincoln Primary School.

The project involved re-modelling of the interior of 3 main blocks. It included opening up of the blocks by removing the majority of the interior walls, installing new aluminium joinery partitions throughout, substantial electrical and data upgrading and full re-decoration. The project had a very tight programme of 7 weeks and was completed on time to minimise disruption for the students. We were delighted to work with Corbel Construction.

Lyttelton Primary School

Mirror Image were also invited to work at Lyttelton Primary School a brand new two-storey school built post-earthquake on the main street of Lyttelton, The result of a post-earthquake merger of Lyttelton Main and Lyttelton West schools.

This project was managed through Naylor Love Construction. The primary structure is a steel frame on a ground bearing slab restrained by ground anchors in the foundations. The façade is timber framed and clad with a Kingspan roof, metal cladding and commercial aluminium joinery.

The main building includes a classroom block with modern open plan classrooms on two levels, with glass partitioned learning spaces and joinery units to cater for the school environment. The adjoining administration block includes the library and technology spaces upstairs, with the reception and staff areas on the ground floor below.

In a first for New Zealand, the separate hall is shared with the local professional theatre company – outside school hours, the hall transforms into the Lyttelton Arts Factory (LAF) venue, with retractable seating and additional cabling infrastructure.

The site itself is on a significant slope and presented many challenges, with important historic elements including foundations and large retaining walls cutting through the hill slope. The site works included new retaining walls, steel and concrete staircases, and an asphalt hard court. This meant for us using a knuckle boom to clean hard to reach windows outside and working at height..

After several years spread operating from two different sites, the local community welcomed their beautiful new school with great enthusiasm and we were delighted to play our role in ensuring the school was immaculately cleaned inside and outside before it opened in September 2016.

New Regent Street was the only remaining heritage streetscape in Christchurch after the February 2011 earthquake. The owners and tenants decided to work together to restore the buildings. Built originally in Spanish Mission Revival style and due to its coherent architectural character the buildings in the street are listed as Category I heritage items by Heritage New Zealand.

Opened by the Mayor of Christchurch on 1st April 1932, New Regent Street was considered a ray of light amidst the depression. Described then as New Zealand’s most beautiful street, it has brought pleasure to shoppers and tourists ever since. In 1986, a one-way restriction was imposed for driving on New Regent Street. This measure was in place for only eight years before the street was closed to traffic in 1994 and turned into a pedestrian mall in preparation for the reintroduction of the  Christchurch tram.

The Naylor Love Canterbury team was awarded the earthquake rebuild contract for bringing the buildings up to code while maintaining the important heritage of the street.  The complex rebuild on 39 titles involved 22 owners and four insurance companies! As part of the strengthening work, structural steel frames were installed in the shop fronts, new reinforced concrete walls, new continuous concrete raft foundation was laid and tied the brickwork to the new structure.

Regent Street cleanRegent Street clean

The street was officially reopened on Saturday, 20 April 2013. Before the reopening Mirror Image Cleaning were contracted to clean the whole site inside and out. This included cleaning off a knuckle boom, as all our team are professionally trained to work at height.

Regent Street clean

We think Regent Street, Christchurch, is still one of New Zealand’s most beautiful streets and are proud to work here.

Cleaning without chemicals. We were delighted to respond to a request to clean a whole house, repaired after the Christchurch earthquake, using no chemicals at all. The repair project was managed and carried out by  GJ Solutions Group Ltd.

Chemical sensitivity is a growing chronic condition characterised by symptoms that the affected person attributes to low-level exposures to commonly used chemicals. These symptoms may include fatigue, headaches, nausea, dizziness, and inflammation of skin, joints and airways. Substances with strong scents are the most common reported triggers. These include a variety of cleaning agents.

So we approached the project through researching chemical free products and decided to use the Eco Store range which is gentle on the environment through the selection of gentle plant and mineral-based ingredients.

The whole house was cleaned top-to-bottom and we were over the moon the owner was able to move in the same day with no symptoms of sensitivity.

Mirror Image are pleased to offer eco-friendly, no-chemical cleaning in and around Christchurch for those looking for an eco-clean.
“I asked Mirror Image Cleaning to clean a home for a client of mine (we had just finished renovating her house) who had multiple, serious chemical sensitivities. No chemicals at all could be used in the cleaning process. Without batting an eyelid, they agreed to do this, showed up with the correct products, delivered a spotlessly clean home, as usual, and the client was healthy and happy.

As with all of my projects, there are individual requests from homeowners, or items I’d like special attention to. Mirror Image take note and need no reminder. Their staff are pleasant, professional, always accommodating and pleasant.” Joanne Hopkinson GJ Solutions Group Ltd
